This is a very important insight into journalism in Ukraine. The author's conclusion is correct. The two biggest obstacles to true journalism in Ukraine are 1. The lack of competition in individual markets and 2. The fact that journalists continue to be dependant on being paid on an article-by-article basis, thus hampering objectivity. This is as true today as when we discovered it in the late 1990's when via a USAID contract five of us expats with a local support staff trained more than 1,000 Ukrainian journalists from nearly every oblast and Crimea.

In fact the journalist as we know him/her is a thing of the past, reading the article , and knowing in Netherlands we have 3 national channels, some commercial and a number of local and provincial, and a number of only-online media, I see a future where anyone with a smartphone can be a journalist/camera team, as we've seen also in Ukraine, even the occupied areas . being a "real"journalist doesn't mean you're unbiased or even right in your facts, regarding  Ukraine I've corrected a number of time (inter)national newssources cause they even didn't have their facts right. Tablets will be the new newspapers.

I hope everyone understands this painful reality of Russian aggression that many Americans feel does not touch them or think that they should not be involved. Since I have been underlining this since the Ukrainian revolution started many of my American friends have ignored all my posts it seems. This tells me of the ignorance and pure disinterested parties of foreign policy. I'm very disappointed that they feel that the only problems we should be facing are those only directly affecting us at home. I understand there are issues all over here at home but believe me that global issues do touch us at home domestically and we need to unite and support all freedom loving nations who work well with and support America!!! Our Congress needs to be akin to this philosophy as well and never underestimate the global influence of foreign policy and the face of the U.S. in terms of its example of freedom, human rights and business relations with the many documents they sign that cannot be passed off as light terms for heavy expectations of accountability that had been expected to be enforced on many issues that each new presidential administration must stand ready to follow and uphold. Otherwise, we lose leadership and grip for, "Which We Stand As a Nation."
