Writing was invented in Sumer, Mesopotamia, c. 3500 BCE, in the form of cuneiform script and refined c. 3200 BCE in the Sumerian city of Uruk. To become a scribe, one had to learn to fashion one's own writing tablet, master the 600 characters of cuneiform, and also become educated in various fields of knowledge including agriculture, botany, business and finance, construction, mathematics, politics, religion, and many others.
Scribes were almost always the sons of the upper class and nobility, but by the Akkadian Period (2334-2218 BCE), there is evidence of female scribes, the most famous being Enheduanna (l. 2285-2250 BCE), daughter of Sargon of Akkad (Sargon the Great, r. 2334-2279 BCE). After the Akkadian Period, cuneiform script was used primarily to write in Akkadian, but a scribe still needed to know Sumerian, which, though it became a dead language, still informed Akkadian in the same way Latin or Sanskrit does in modern-day languages.
After the fall of the Akkadian Empire, the other civilizations of Mesopotamia ? including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Hittites, Kassites, and others ? used cuneiform script to write their own languages, but the scribe still needed to know Sumerian and Akkadian and continued to copy documents from the past. Through this practice, the scribes of ancient Mesopotamia created 'history' by preserving the past in written form.

Russian archaeologists have reconstructed a male headdress of a Pazyryk man, whose burial was excavated in Altai inUst-Teplaya burial ground. Apparently, it was a felt headdress with a comb-like pommel, the front part of which was decorated with two rows of plaques in the form of eagles. In addition, it is possible that a figurine of an ungulate animal was attached to the side of the headdress, or it was located somewhere nearby. This was reported in an article published in the journal Notes of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Around the 6th?3rd centuries BC, that is, in the early Iron Age, the Pazyryk archaeological culture existed in Altai and adjacent lands, research of which has been ongoing for more than 150 years. It was left by people belonging to the so-called Scythian-Siberian world, which is united by a triad of similar weapons, horse equipment and animal style in art. The main monuments of the Pazyryk culture are concentrated in the Altai Mountains, where burials of both ordinary representatives of this community and its elite are known. People are mainly known about the Pazyryk people thanks to burial complexes with ice lenses, which have preserved to this day not only the mummified bodies of people, but also numerous objects made from organic materials, such as a carpet and a ceremonial chariot.

In 1996, in the Charyshsky district of the Altai Territory, during the construction of a road, an ancient burial ground of different times was accidentally discovered, called Ust-Teplaya. The earliest burials of this monument belong to the Afanasiev archaeological culture, which appeared in the south of Siberia in the second half of the 4th millennium BC. In particular, the grave of the so-called Afanasyevsk Romeo and Juliet was recently excavated here - a paired burial of two teenagers who died at the age of approximately 10?12 years.

The burials of the Pazyryk culture are also known in the Ust-Teplaya burial ground, one of which was devoted to a new article by archaeologist Sergey Grushin from Altai State University and his colleagues from St. Petersburg. Under mound number 22, the mound of which reached a diameter of 6.5 meters, researchers discovered the undisturbed grave of a man 25-30 years old with a high social status. Along with him in the burial were a horse, ceramics, a bronze hryvnia covered with gold foil, a votive bronze dagger and an iron knife.

In addition, next to the Pazyryk skull, archaeologists discovered the remains of a headdress. Apparently, it was made of felt, of which only organic decay has survived to this day. The front part of the dress was decorated with eight plaques made in the shape of eagles from a bronze sheet and covered with gold foil. A figurine of an ungulate animal also lay nearby, but it is unclear whether it was attached to the side of the headdress or placed somewhere next to it.

Due to the fact that archaeologists had already found Pazyryk headdresses in good condition, they reconstructed the appearance of this find. It was probably a man's helmet with a comb-like bird-headed top. Similar artifacts discovered in the southeast of Altai date back to the 4th - early 3rd centuries BC and are found only in burials performed according to the classical Pazyryk rite.

Some Pazyryk sites attract scientists even decades after they were first excavated. For example, we recently reported that archaeologists further explored the fifth Pazyryk mound and extracted from it the outer frame of the leader?s burial structure.

If there is one thing that frightens me about the memory of the Holocaust, it is identifying the revolting trends that occurred in Europe as a whole, and in Germany in particular, some 70, 80 and 90 years ago, and finding evidence of those trends here, among us, in 2016.
There is nothing easier than to hate those who are different; there is nothing easier than to sow fear and terror; there is nothing easier than to behave like animals, conform and be self righteous. It is worthwhile, and even necessary, for Holocaust Remembrance Day to be a day of national soul searching. And in our national soul searching we must include phenomena that are very disturbing.


?Golan?s foolhardiness has become obvious since his bracing Holocaust Day speech on Wednesday at Kibbutz Tel Yitzhak, in which he refrained from casting Israeli society as an eternal victim but warned against the increasing intolerance that could turn it into a potential perpetrator as well. I am assuming that Golan knew that his words would be made public, that he was cognizant of the tremors of shock they would send throughout Israel and parts of the Jewish world, especially on such a sensitive day, and that he was fully aware that within the space of a few hours he would become public enemy no. 1 for Israeli right wingers and self-styled Jewish patriots abroad. If he didn?t know, he?s an idiot, if he did and went ahead nonetheless then he?s a fool, career-wise at least, but more of a hero as well.?

This is the exact quote from the paper:

"At midnight on October 7, the IDF ordered all of its combat units in practice to use the 'Hannibal Directive', although without clearly mentioning this explicit name. The order was to stop 'at all costs' any attempt by Hamas terrorists to return to Gaza, that is despite the fear that some of them have hostages.
