Zonder gekheid, het overleg over de zware wapens is belangrijk, maar het gaat over wat er aan kanonnen vooraf gaat. De terreur van de separatisten. Alles wijst erop dat ze bezig zijn een nieuwe offensief te openen om Oekraïne nog verder te ontwrichten.
De afgelopen maanden zijn er verscheidene aanslagen gepleegd in Charkov. Het werk van pro-Russische activisten die vorig jaar de stad al op het randje van een burgeroorlog brachten. Zij probeerden toen de macht over te nemen in de stad, maar anders dan in Donetsk en Loehansk slaagden de Oekraïense autoriteiten erin de opstand in de kiem te smoren.
Ook in de havenstad Odessa zijn de afgelopen weken aanslagen gepleegd. Odessa is stevig in handen van de Oekraïense autoriteiten, maar in de Russische gemeenschap broeit het nog steeds. Vorig jaar mei kwamen in de stad veertig mensen om toen pro-Oekraïense betogers en Transnistriers met elkaar slaags raakten. Het is vrij zeker dat de FSB toen beide partijen tegen elkaar heeft opgezet en een hand had in de escalatie van het conflict. Zoals ze er ook waren op Maidan toen daar schoten vielen. Iedereen weet dat er vaak maar een klein tikkje nodig is om mensen tegen elkaar op te zetten. De onrust wordt zorgvuldig geregisseerd.
Het is duidelijk dat alle aanslagen nu deel uitmaken van een nieuwe poging een opstand uit te lokken in Charkov en Odessa. De rebellen hebben er nooit een geheim van gemaakt dat zij de twee miljoenensteden graag aan hun 'Nieuw-Rusland' zouden willen toevoegen: pas dan zou het rebellengebied ook economisch een stevige grondslag krijgen. Maar het zou een enorme escalatie van de oorlog in Oekraïne betekenen en ongetwijfeld tot gigantische destructie leiden: Kiev zal zich met hand en tand verzetten tegen iedere poging van de rebellen ook deze steden in handen te krijgen.
Voorlopig lijken de rebellen weinig animo te hebben zich aan het akkoord van Minsk te houden. Met de zegen van Poetin namen ze na het ingaan van het staakt-het-vuren de strategische stad Debaltseve in en nu lijken ze zich op te maken voor een aanval op de havenstad Marioepol. Daar zwaaiden ze in mei vorig jaar even de scepter, totdat ze door arbeiders van de staalfabrieken uit de stad verdreven werden.
Want hoewel u het doet voorkomen of alle verzet tegen de rebellen van nazi's komt, is er wel degelijk veel weerstand onder de gewone bevolking tegen de Russische inmenging in wat feitelijk een binnenlandse aangelegenheid is. Velen zijn van mening dat het conflict door tussenkomst van de Russen juist enorm uit de hand is gelopen. Het geven van materiële steun (tanks, wapens en manschappen) aan de rebellen heeft het conflict totaal uit zijn verband getrokken. Het werd pas een echte oorlog toen de Russen zich ermee bemoeiden. Dat is de mening van zowel Russisch sprekenden als Oekraïners.
De steun van de Russische president Vladimir Poetin voor de separatisten in het oosten van Oekraïne is dan ook als een boemerang teruggekaatst en heeft geleid tot meer nationalisme in de rest van Oekraïne. 'Poetin heeft Oekraïne verloren, omdat hij jonge Oekraïense nationalisten tegenover zich heeft en hij met nog meer verzet tegemoet wordt getreden', vertelde de Poolse parlementsvoorzitter Radek Sikorski in een interview met de Poolse televisie.
Het is niet voor niets dat Poetin bezig is het ontstane beeld van oorlogshitser te vervangen door dat van de vredesengel die er alles aan doet om partijen te verzoenen. Voor de eigen bühne is dat geen probleem, de mediaverzorgers van het Kremlin zorgen ervoor dat Poetins smetten cosmetisch worden weggepoetst, maar buiten Rusland is het slechts een hele kleine minderheid die dat nog gelooft.
