Barack Obama extends sanctions against Belarus officials for another year.
US President Barack Obama extended the sanctions against a number of Belarusian officials, imposed in 2006 by his predecessor George Bush, for another year. The message to the US Congress was posted on the official website of the White House.
According to the statement, "actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Belarus and other persons to undermine Belarus's democratic processes or institutions". Sanctions involve blocking accounts of these persons in US banks, a ban on their entry to the United States, and a ban on business contacts with American companies.
The black list for the Belarusian authorities was first introduced in 2006. In 2010, after the last presidential election, the list of Belarusian officials banned from entering the US has been extended. It includes the current head of state Alexander Lukashenko and his son Viktor, CEC Chairman Lidia Ermoshina, the Head of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate Viktor Sheiman, former deputy head of the Presidential Administration Natalia Petkevich and others.
Eric Rubin, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, said in one of the interviews:"We would like to make the cancellation of the sanctions possible and to normalize relations with Belarus, but this requires progress in solving the problems identified in the legislation (according to which the sanctions were imposed. - note)".
