Holodomor
Hitler was inspired by Stalin's genocide of Ukrainians a decade before WWII. Yet, Hitler's genocide did not come close to the scale and evil efficiency that the Soviets carried out. Germans revile Hitler with the rest of the world's civilized people but sadly, many Russians today adore Stalin who imprisoned, tortured and snuffed out twenty times more human lives than Hitler did.
I am re-reading Frans Werfel's book "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh" about the Armenian Genocide in Turkey. He published it in 1933 in Germany and of course Hitler banned and burned it. In light of recent events it's an entirely different read than when I first read it in 1986. That Genocide inspired both Stalin and Hitler who both noted the world's lack of serious concern for the Armenian people.
One of the lines I underlined back then still stood out to me today because it speaks to another type of indirect Genocide still being carried out today even in Crimea and Syria; the deportation of entire populations.
This is a quote of Armenian Patriarch and chief priest of Turkey Monsignor Savin of Constantinople when Enver Pasha was slaughtering his people.
