usa gave money to Pakistan to support muhanjadin, who gave it to pro-pakistan islamic militas in Pakistan regions, in hope afghanistan would have a pro- pkistan puppet regime. Thats why after inital defeat of taliban they regrouped in border region with afghanistan of pakistan and government pakistan did nothing to stop them, how succesfull usa was (and nato) can be seen with now rapid gains of taliban... and even cnn reported use of "captured" american vehicles by taliban...
