A true book that Russians don't like.
170 years ago, a famous and scandalous book about Russia was published in Paris. The author, Astolphe de Custine, called his work "Russia in 1839." Another version of the title exists: "The Whole Truth about Russia."
The book itself was strictly banned in Russia. Small excerpts were first published in 1910. Under Soviet rule, Custine's work, of course, was also banned. Only in 1930 did a "political prisoner publishing house" called "Nikolaevskaya Rossiya" publish small, grossly distorted excerpts. And only in 1996 was it published in full.
