5 laws of stupidity

Article from the famous economist about what idiots are and whether it is possible to be with them.

Italian historian and economist Carlo Cipolla has taken a profound approach to the question of the nature of stupidity. Years of research led him to formulate five universal laws that apply to any society. It turns out that stupidity itself is far more dangerous than we're accustomed to thinking.

The First Law of Stupidity

People always underestimate the number of idiots around them.
It sounds like vague platitudes and snobbery, but life proves its truth. No matter how you evaluate people, you will constantly encounter the following situations:

A man who always appeared intelligent and rational turns out to be an incredible idiot;

Fools always appear in the most unexpected places at the most inopportune times to ruin your plans.

The Second Law of Stupidity

The likelihood of a person being stupid is independent of their other qualities.
Years of observation and experience have confirmed my belief that people are not equal; some are stupid, others are not, and this quality is determined by nature, not by cultural factors. A person is a fool just as they are red-haired or have O blood type. They were born that way by the will of Providence, if you will.

Education has nothing to do with the likelihood of a certain number of fools in society. This has been confirmed by numerous university experiments on five groups: students, office workers, support staff, administrative staff, and faculty. When I analyzed a group of low-skilled employees, the number of fools turned out to be larger than I expected (First Law), and I attributed this to social conditions: poverty, segregation, lack of education. But going higher up the social ladder, I saw the same ratio among white-collar workers and students. Even more impressive was seeing the same percentage among the professors—whether I was at a small provincial college or a large university, the same proportion of faculty turned out to be idiots. I was so astonished by the results that I decided to conduct an experiment on the intellectual elite—Nobel laureates. The result confirmed the superpowers of nature: the same number of laureates were stupid.

The idea expressed by the Second Law is difficult to accept, but numerous experiments confirm its ironclad truth. Feminists will support the Second Law because it states that there are no more fools among women than fools among men. Residents of Third World countries will take comfort in the fact that developed countries are not so developed. The implications of the Second Law are frightening: will you move in British high society or move to Polynesia and befriend the local bounty hunters; Whether you lock yourself away in a monastery or spend the rest of your life in a casino surrounded by prostitutes, you will always encounter the same number of idiots, which (First Law) will always exceed your expectations.

The Third Law of Stupidity

A fool is a person whose actions lead to losses for another person or group of people, and at the same time do not bring benefit to the actor himself or even turn out to be harmful to him.

The third law suggests that all people are divided into four groups: simpletons (S), smart guys (S), bandits (B) and fools (F).

If Petya takes an action that results in losses for him and benefits Vasya, he is a simpleton (zone P).
If Petya does something that benefits both him and Vasya, he is a smart guy because he acted smartly (zone U). If Petya's actions benefit him, but Vasya suffers, Petya is a bandit (zone B). And finally, Stupid Petya is in zone G, in the minus zone on both axes.

It's not hard to imagine the scale of damage fools can inflict when they gain positions of power and wield political and social authority. But it's worth clarifying what exactly makes a fool dangerous.

Stupid people are dangerous because rational people have difficulty understanding the logic of irrational behavior. A smart person can understand the logic of a bandit because a bandit is rational—he only wants more benefits and is not smart enough to earn them. Bandits are predictable, so you can build a defense against them. It's impossible to predict a fool's actions; they'll harm you without reason, without purpose, without plan, in the most unexpected place, at the most inopportune time. You have no way to predict when an idiot will strike. In a confrontation with a fool, a smart person completely surrenders to the fool's mercy, a random creature with no rules the smart person understands.

Such an attack of stupidity usually leaves one in shock.

Even when an attack becomes obvious, it is difficult to defend against because it does not have a rational structure.

This is what Schiller wrote about: "Even the gods are powerless against stupidity."

The Fourth Law of Stupidity

Non-fools always underestimate the destructive potential of fools.

In particular, non-fools constantly forget that dealing with a fool, at any time, in any place, and under any circumstances, means making a mistake that will cost you dearly in the future.

Simpletons from Zone P are usually unable to recognize the danger of fools from Zone G, which is not surprising. What is surprising is that fools are also underestimated by both smart guys and bandits. In the presence of a fool, they relax and enjoy their intellectual superiority, instead of quickly mobilizing and minimizing the damage when the fool does something.

A common stereotype is that a fool only harms himself. No. Fools should not be confused with helpless simpletons. Never form an alliance with fools, imagining that you can use them for your own gain—if you do so, it is obvious that you do not understand the nature of stupidity. So you yourself provide the fool with a field in which he can roam and cause more damage.

The Fifth Law of Stupidity

A fool is the most dangerous personality type.

A fool is more dangerous than a bandit.

The result of the ideal bandit's actions is a simple transfer of wealth from one person to another. Society as a whole benefits neither from this. If all members of this society were ideal bandits, it would quietly rot, but the catastrophe would not have occurred. The entire system would boil down to a wealth transfer for the benefit of those who undertake it, and since everyone would be a perfect bandit, the system would enjoy stability. This is easy to see in any country where the government is corrupt and citizens constantly circumvent the law.

Whenever the dupaki come out on stage, the captain changes at midnight. They inflict damage, not extracting benefits. They destroy good, society suffers.

History confirms that in any period, a country progresses when there are enough smart people in power to restrain the active fools and prevent them from destroying what the smart ones have created. In a regressing country, there are just as many fools, but among the elite, there is an increasing proportion of stupid bandits, and among the rest of the population, naive simpletons. Such a change in the balance invariably increases the destructive consequences of the actions of fools, and the whole country goes to hell.
