Russian soldiers and their Ukrainian proxies never implemented either of the Minsk accords and their attacks increased this week. Sanctions should be expanded if there is any hope for a political settlement of the Russian invasion. Keeping existing sanctions in place is not enough, that has not deter Russia from sending more soldiers and equipment into Ukraine to fight their government. Sanctions have to be dramatically increased to include expulsion of Russia from the SWIFT and the Security Council of the UN. There is no room for a predator country openly challenging the Western world, lying and pretending everyone else should belief their ridiculous claims of victimhood. Our presence in the NATO countries, exercises and training should increase as Russia is provoking the West on daily basis. It is easier to stop them than to drive them back. We should also arm the Ukrainian military immediately so they have a fighting chance, they already lost 6,000 lives. What are we waiting for, what is the magic number of how many more have to die before we extend them help? 10,000? 100,000? A million? If Ukraine does not stop the (new) Soviet advance, we will have to, with our troops. Should Ukraine fall, Russia will draft their men into Russia's military, making them stronger. We have a choice, but for a limited amount of time. It is not out of the question that if we continue to turn a cold shoulder to Ukraine, they (and others) may need to join Russia to survive in some form.

The number of people in Crimea identifying as ethnic Ukrainians has fallen by 232,000 between the 2001 census conducted by the Ukrainian government and the 2014 census conducted by the Russian occupation authorities, a decline that has reduced the percentage of ethnic Ukrainians on the peninsula from 24.0 to 15.1 percent.
