Putin & Putin alone has sought to bring Ukraine back under some kind of Russian rule. Here's the thing Ukraine never did & certainly now never wants to go back into Russian control. While the West pontificated about Russia's orbits & spheres pandering to what Russia wants & historically saying it was in some way OK this  left the door open wide  for Putin to just grab land here & there. Georgia in 2008 was a test for the West & Crimea & Donbas 2014 should have woken West up into a new reality.
Meanwhile in Russia 60% of the population believe the lies of Putin's special peaceful mission into Ukraine hook line & sinker. The 8 yrs of bombing on Russian held Donbas & Luhansk is fake but real in the Russian minds. Just as Russians believe only 500 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine as there has been no Russian bombing or shelling. They can't work out how the peace loving  Russian soldiers have been killed other than by Banderites & NATO forces. Moving the brain washing when Russian media & TV is hell bent on a Russian Crusade built on deception need a miracle of epic proportions.
