October 21, 1947 — The Soviet "Operation West" in Lviv
In the middle of the night, Soviet occupation forces launched Operation "West" across Western Ukraine. NKVD death squads stormed into people's homes, giving them just 20 minutes to pack their belongings. Anyone who resisted was executed on the spot.

Their main targets were Ukrainians suspected of supporting the UPA — which meant almost everyone — as well as priests, teachers, peasants, the elderly, and children. In just one night, 70,000 Ukrainians were deported in cattle cars to Siberia.

That's why there are still so many Ukrainians in Siberia today. I've personally spoken to people from there — and not one of them said they loved Russia or supported Putin. Quite the opposite — some even said they wished China would occupy them, just to escape Russia's rule.

From my own observations, St. Petersburg ranks second in anti-Russian sentiment. In my entire life, I've met only one person from there who actually liked Putin. And it's no coincidence that in 2014, St. Petersburg saw one of the largest marches in Russia against the war on Ukraine.
