I bring before you a debating point. During Putins reign, the development of frozen conflicts as a foreign policy tool has been developed and used extensively. However...in Ukraine he used it once too much, and now finds himself in an inescapeable trap, that can only have one ending; his demise. And the tool that has him undone? -Ukraines refusal to allow the situation to become a stabilized frozen conflict. Thus the best thing Ukraine can do, is keep fighting. Allow me to explain;

    Donbass can not hold its own against Ukraine.

    Russia must support Donbass for it to survive.

    As long as Russia continues to support Donbass, sanctions stay.

    Russia cannot allow Donbass to take signifficant new land anymore, as it would trigger new sanctions, as Russia would be clearly involved.

    Russia cannot afford to abandon Donbass, it would kill Putins popularity.

    In the current situation, since Kerry called in favors and murdered the oil price, Russia economy is in jeopardy of a total crash, setting a danger for Putins popularity.

In conclusion, the current economic development is too dangerous for Putin to let continue for long, or he risks an uprising in the longer run. He cannot give up Donbass or he risks a popularity crash and an uprising, he cannot move forward in Donbass or he risks a faster economic crash and an uprising. The only out for him would be if Ukraine stabilised the situation and asked everyone to let up on Russia...and they are not.

In conclusion. Its the perfect storm. You cannot plan a trap this well. Putin has no out.
