The Council of the EU decided to suspend sanctions against Belarus, but may re-introduce them if necessary.
The statement was made on 12 October by Harlem Désir, the French Minister of State for European affairs following the EU Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg, TASS reports.
"We have made a decision, in light of the release of several political prisoners, and after elections that were held in an atmosphere of consolidation, though we are awaiting a report from observers to make a more complete decision. The decision that was made is to have the opportunity to extend sanctions against Belarus, but to suspend them to promote human rights, democracy, the rule of law," Desir told reporters.
The Germany's FM Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in his turn, commented on the results of the presidential election in Belarus: "We have an impression that the elections did not meet international standards. However, compared with previous presidential election, change is obvious".
Earlier in the day, Steinmeier said that a number of European Union members were ready to ease sanctions against Belarus if the current political situation in the country was maintained, Sputnik reported.

I don't know if any of you guys are interested in history. This particular series of events has very similar parallels to the war mongering of Vladimir Putin to some extent.
I have been looking at this book written at fortnightly intervals by Winston Churchill between 1936 and 1939 regarding his fears about the build up of Germany's war machine. The book is called Step by Step
Here he shows the invasion of parts of Austria and the Rhineland.
Concerns were raised at the League of Nations who like the UN proved to be toothless. Churchill warned over and over again in parliament of the dangers of Germany but people thought he was crazy until too late.
The book is chilling reading.
