In July 988, Grand Duke Volodymyr, the ruler of the medieval Ukrainian empire then known as "Rus" (pronunced as roos) ordered the citizens of his capital city Kyiv to be baptized in the river Dnipro, thus establishing Christianity as the official religion of his empire. The main celebration of the millennium of this occasion in 1988 took place in Moscow, and not in Kyiv.
It should be noted that in 988 there was no Moscow, and the territory now known as Russia was one of several provinces of the Rus empire, ruled by the local princes loyal to the ruler of Kyiv. Following the onslaught of Tatars and other invaders, the city of Kyiv was plundered and lost is importance, while the northern provinces were able to develop and to prosper. Eventually, having ignored the treaty of friendship signed by the two nations, the rulers of Moscow managed to tighten its grip and eventually to completely subjugate Ukraine. Then in the 18th century, the name of Russia, a corruption of the ancient honorable name of Rus, appeared on the map. The rulers of Russia decided not only to steal the name of the medieval Ukrainian empire Rus, but to make themselves the successor io its history, culture and tradition.

problem is the other big ones in UNSC know only way to fix it, is to get also their vetopowers out, and they don't want that...best would be GA of UN get those vetopowers out but don't know if that has the weight of power to do so.. and then you get the behind doors pressure of all the big ones to leave it as it is... Well, not really (I am a Chinese resident, so I am interested in Japanese military for obvious reasons). Japanese armed forces are in the stage of a major transition (from pure relying on US help to be fully sustainable and able to project force by themselves in the neighboring areas). This military buildup can be partially attributed to the rise of Chinese armed forces, but also to total failure of Obama's Pacific policy (to put things short - Japan no longer thinks US will be able or willing to back them up on important issues). Japan can rely on superior training of their troops, but it still needs several years to fully complete its critical military systems to be at least on par with the rest of the region. Again, to put things short - it will take years until Japan puts together a reasonable carrier battle group, but once operational, we can expect it to be more capable than the Chinese Liaoning carrier group (because Chinese have no real experience with training their navy personnel for effective carrier operations).
