Die laatste wordt ook door de VS erkent omdat die zichzelf als vijand van het shiitische Iran ziet. Volgens de VN zijn er tot september dit jaar ruim 2.000 burgerdoden gevallen bij het conflict in Jemen en nog eens duizenden mensen waarvan onduidelijk is of zij burgers of militanten waren. Saoedi-Arabië is een van de grootste importeurs van Amerikaans wapentuig. Eerder werd al een deal gesloten voor 5,4 miljard dollar aan raketten en 11,25 miljard dollar aan oorlogsschepen. De verkoop is onderdeel van de 'strategie' van president Barack Obama om de relaties met zoveel mogelijk soenitische islamitische golfstaten te versterken en de macht van het shiitische Iran in te dammen. Iran daarentegen heeft haar wapenleveranties opgevoerd aan de Houthi's-rebbelen in Jemen, aan hezbollah in Libanon en aan president Assad in Syrië.
