USA is I think surprised the Ukrainians kept the russians from getting more then what is it 6% of the land. Don't count on USA to keep its Budapest Memorandum promises, they've showed that from start. Obama's order to Merkel is to not intervene, untill ex-sovietunion countries in EU/NATO are fed up that, and in case russia next year will resume invasion of east-Ukraine side up with Ukraine, Poland and Baltics first.
