Western Ukraine is a region rich in traditions and they celebrate them avidly and they are a part of their lives. Christmas, Malanka/Vasylya (New Year Julian calendar), Epiphany and more are all celebrated indoors and out in the dead of winter. Fires are lit, water is blessed and Kutya is eaten in every home. The churches are open, and carolers are singing, and people greet each other with prophecies of a good crop come spring time and throw wheat on the steps of house holds they enter.
This was an amazing experience. It wasn't just a story I was told by my parents, it was real. The homes were warm and plentiful, and I was welcomed as if I were family. When their husbands' who have perished, friends find out they come and help these widows, by cutting wood, bringing food, whatever is necessary. When the other villagers see this, some shut up, others take interest and try to understand they are in Ukraine and Russia is invading. It is an ongoing process. They men who are volunteer or conscripted soldiers in Ukraine are fabulous. We need to take our hats off to them.
To keep warm, they burn wood in the wood burning stoves, and make do with everything possible. I imagine the villages in the west are similar, but the west has family members who work in Italy, Spain, Germany, and other western countries and send money home. Most of the Ukrainians of my parents' generation fled western Ukraine when the Bolsheviks were advancing toward the west and the Germans were fleeing and losing the war in 1944. These people left families in western Ukraine and their Ukrainian Catholic church which they have supported non stop to the present day. The people where I was visiting had no one in the west, and for many I was the first visitor from America. They are wonderful people and they are terrified that Russia is only a few feet away from them.
These people in the East, have never lived under Austria-Hungary, or Poland. They lived under Tsars and Bolsheviks, but they have cities like Konotop, Chyhyryn and Poltava not far south from them. This is where our greatest army and greatest defender of Ukraine was in the 17 and 18th centuries, the Kozaky, Hetmanshchyna. They showed me embroidery and crafts and churches and places that had to do with Hetmany and Kozaky.
They know who they are, but the Russians have been there so long. They speak a lovely Ukrainian. Not like Kyiv, which is a bit like ratatouille to language, but like people who were in my orthodox church in New Haven, CT. My mother didn't speak that way, and always told me how beautiful the people in that church spoke. I believed her. We were orthodox because my father was from northwestern Ukraine and they are orthodox. So that is where I first heard Ukrainian from Velyka Ukrayina as I was told.
When you are that far East, and I was told that the real East is where they are fighting, the sense of invasion is very very real. The boys there are big and tall, and in uniform they are even bigger, but they have the nicest smiles and warm eyes I have ever seen. They are descendants of Kozaky. They are so so angry with the situation. They are very very happy to have support from Ukrainians in the diaspora. This is very meaningful to them.
I wrote what they say about us in the world up top. People in Ukraine don't feel it is a conflict or a situation or event. People in Ukraine feel they have been invaded. What is interesting this time, is they are able to communicate with Ukrainians all over Ukraine, and all over the world. We all know it is a war and has been since before 1914. What is interesting is that many Ukrainians are just finding this out for the first time. Many Ukrainians have no clue about how our parents ended up in America and what happened to UPA and its soldiers. When I tell them my father was in UPA from 1942 to 1948, and the war did not end for Ukraine in 1945 they are flabbergasted. They have been celebrating the end of a war for 70 years not realizing for Ukraine the war has never ended. Only now is that becoming clear.
With this realization, it doesn't matter what the others say is happening here. They are the west and they are trying to figure out what is happening themselves, because they have been tangled into Russia's propaganda operation.
