it's all about the money, all oil countries want pipelines/shipping routes to the biggest economic bloc in the world EUrope...preventing another Ribbentrop-Molotov is just second.

Both issues are tightly intertwined. Replacing RuSSian oil and gas in Europe will strip RuSSia off of some $60 billion annual export sales revenue, what is more than its whole defence budget. If RuSSia and its Middle Eastern allies lose control over the Lebanese Beqaa Valley and northern Syria, oil and gas pipelines will be able to flood the whole Europe with cheap oil and gas flowing by them from North Africa and the Middle East. RuSSia will fight in Syria until its bitter end. Losing Lebanon and northern Syria will spell RuSSia's end as an even regional superpower.

East-Syria, former Sunni states of Damascus and Aleppo which were put under Allawite rule by French to form Syria, are the pipeline way to EUrope..and Russia tries to prevent that and Sunni oilcountries try to prevent shia oilcountries to use that way...
