RIGHTEOUS CALIPHATE. ABU BAKR, 632-634

By 632, as a result of many campaigns and sermons, most Arabs recognized the authority of Muhammad and accepted Islam. In the territory that was subordinated to the young Muslim state, there lived many Christians, Jews and magicians (fire worshipers), who entered into agreements withMuhammad's commanders entered into agreements with subordination, pledging to give part of the harvest to the Islamic community. In addition, all Muslims were required to pay zakat - an annual tax that was used to support and expand the theocratic state. Thus, already by 632, a large amount of various goods arrived in Medina, and in addition to a huge spiritual heritage, Muhammad transferred to his followers unprecedented political power and sources of wealth.

The death of the prophet, even if predicted by him several days before the event, was a grave crisis. His closest followers needed to urgently decide how to live and what to do next. The very first issue was the transfer of power. The previous tribal system was seemingly destroyed, all those who converted to Islam became brothers to each other in the new country, but power among the Arabs was traditionally passed on by inheritance. On the other hand, the new state needed an imam - specifically a religious leader, since the very foundation of the state was based on a new faith.

While Muhammad's family was preparing for the funeral and was immersed in grief, three of his earliest and most faithful followers - Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (the main friend and faithful companion of Muhammad), Umar ibn al-Khattab (the adamant and authoritative organizer who gave the movement seriousness ) as well as Abu Amr Uthman ibn Affan (a rich and born organizer) - were faced with the fact that local rulers, noble residents of Medina, taking advantage of their capital position, organized a ?meeting under a canopy?, where they had already managed to choose a new leader. A dispute began in which the leaders of the Muhajirs convinced the local Ansars that power could not be transferred in this way. The Ansars did not give in and even invited the Muhajirs to choose their successor, and the Ansars to choose theirs.

According to Usman?s recollections, the Ansars, surrounded by their native walls and many of their people, felt very confident, but soon the streets of Medina were filled with warriors who had not previously been allowed into the city. The fact is that just these days Usman was supposed to lead another raid to the north, planned by Muhammad. Warriors from various tribes, often traditionally hostile to the Arabs of Medina, arrived at the camp near Medina from all over the world, and they were not allowed to appear within the city limits. The rumor of the death of the prophet broke this prohibition, and along with the crowds of screaming Bedouins, the confidence of the Ansar began to fade. Finally, everyone agreed on a single candidate, Abu Bakr, the most faithful and closest of the people who surrounded Muhammad during his life.

In the heat of the elections, the Ansars did not think to remember that Muhammad had a large family, whom they forgot to ask their opinion on the transfer of power. The head of this family after the death of the prophet was Ali ibn Abu Talib, the cousin of Muhammad, the first person born in the Kaaba, the first of the children to become a Muslim in infancy, the faithful companion of the prophet, who was 32 years old. He was a very worthy candidate, and Usman was clearly in a hurry to force the Ansars to make a decision, until they remembered Ali and proposed to consider his candidacy (by the way, Ali?s name still sounded, but there were only three who proposed his candidacy and they were not heard). Thus, Ali, one might say, was not even proposed as a successor, and Muhammad?s family was actually pushed out of power.

Naturally, these thoughts soon crossed the minds of many people. Again, during the last pilgrimage, Muhammad declared Ali as his heir and brother, adding that those who accepted Muhammad should also accept Ali. However, Ali, devoted to the cause of Islam and observing an acute crisis in the state, refused such conversations and chose not to express his claims to power.

Some time later, the leaders of the new triumvirate came to visit Ali, and what happened in his house forever remained a mystery to history. All we know is that Fatima, Ali's wife, died, as they say, from beatings. And she also asked that neither Usman nor Umar come to her funeral. All this is enough to spread rumors of usurpation. In the future, the followers of the tradition of the first caliphate will be called Sunnis. Those who do not recognize the first caliphs and believe that the imam should be passed on only by inheritance, that is, the first real caliph was always Ali, began to be called Shiites. The real bloody schism (or ?fitnah?) would happen later, but the roots of the schism appeared already in 632.

However, it cannot be denied that the first caliphs were those who possessed the great ability to unite and conquer. It was the first three caliphs who defeated neighboring empires and created a new superpower. And Ali will wait his turn and will be honestly elected as the fourth caliph.

Then ordinary Muslims began to ask Abu Bakr whether he had now become a prophet of Allah. Abu Bakr said that the true and last prophet was and remains Muhammad, and he is just a deputy, or ?caliph.? In the future, all rulers of a unified Islamic state called themselves caliphs. Thus, the state ruled by a religious leader - the Imam of the Muslims - became known as the caliphate.

The Prophet died, and many Muslims decided that the contract with him had ended, so they no longer had to pay taxes. In addition, already during the life of Muhammad, people with whom God spoke began to appear in different regions of Arabia. The position of these false prophets became much stronger since the prophet of Medina died and they were still alive. There was both a political and religious crisis. As a result, in the very first days, almost the entire state of Muhammad ceased to exist, and only Mecca, Medina and a couple of tribes throughout Arabia remained loyal to the new caliph. However, Abu Bakr was unwilling to reverse Muhammad's final orders and sent the army assembled by Uthman to the north. Khalid's first major encounter with the Persians was the "Battle of the Shackled." The large but clumsy army of the Persians could not keep up with the mobile army of the Arabs, mainly cavalry. Having exhausted the Persians enough with campaigns in pursuit of themselves, the Arabs finally attacked the army led by Hormuz. The Persians, as often in the case when they were not confident in the strength of their infantry, chained some of their soldiers together with chains. It did not help. Subsequently, Khalid defeated the Persians several more times, who assembled large infantry armies, but were always inferior in cavalry. In the battle of Walaj, the Persians generally stood between the mountains and held formation until it turned out that Khalid sent the cavalry on a large detour and it went around the mountains, showing up from the rear. The Persians were once again surrounded, lost control and morale, and were killed. The finale of Khalid's campaign was the Battle of Firaz, where the Byzantines decided to rush to the aid of the Persian border army. The combined Allied forces outnumbered the Arabs ten times. But an attempt to attack the Arabs by crossing the river led to the Arabs quickly attacking, occupying the bridge and pressing a huge army against the river. In horror, the Byzantines and Persians tried to escape across the river while they were shot with arrows. It was a complete disaster. Having inflicted numerous defeats on the Persians in a row, the Arabs established military camps in the desert near Mesopotamia, but had not yet crossed the great rivers deep into the heart of Persia. Without stopping, Khalid and his army crossed the Byzantine border and broke into eastern Syria...

Abu Bakr himself began the defense of Mecca, for the closest of the false prophets, Tulaiha, set his sights on capturing this sacred place. The balance of forces was 600 versus 30,000, not in favor of Abu Bakr. However, experienced warriors, brilliant tacticians and strategists were able to turn the tide of the war in their favor. While Abu Bakr held Mecca, tribes broke away from the rebels one after another. Instead of being captured, all apostates simply returned to Islam, thereby replenishing the army that was restoring statehood.

So, several months of active defense allowed Abu Bakr to increase his forces, and after Usman returned from the north, the Arabs, divided into 11 detachments, marched throughout Arabia and quickly (and bloodily) ended this crisis. Could Ali, if elected, end the crisis like this? Judging by his future peacefulness and desire for compromise, this is not a fact.

Without stopping, the northern armies of the Arabs crossed a border that did not exist for them and invaded the lands of the Persian and Byzantine empires. Abu Bakr, having received the first news of successful raids on the territory of neighboring states, blessed the continuation of the war and began to organize four armies for the war against southern Palestine, where Byzantine troops and the Ghassanid Arabs vassal to the Greeks were already waiting for them. He sent his best commander, Khalid ibn al-Walid, nicknamed ?The Sword of Allah,? on a campaign against Persia. The Arab army was going to march along the banks of the Euphrates, where many Arabs lived on the desert side, and Abu Bakr hoped to annex these lands to the ummah. Israel does not have the right to self-defense that it claims in the Gaza Strip owing to its status as an occupying power, according to the UN special rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Albanese was appointed to the post in 2022 for a three year term, also believes that Israel?s military response to the multipronged attack by Hamas on Oct. 7 has gone beyond simply defending its own territory and its citizens.

?The right to self-defense that Israel has invoked under Article 51 of the UN Charter is quite clear. It entitles a state to repel an attack that comes from another state.
