The International Union of Geological Sciences has decisively rejected the Anthropocene as a new era in the history of the Earth. The term, which has been actively discussed for 15 years, will remain informal.

After the Ice Age 11,700 years ago, the Holocene began - the era in which humanity lives to this day. However, some scientists in the 20th century proposed a new period in the history of the planet, dating back to the mid-19th century - the Anthropocene. As the name suggests, man has become the main actor influencing the Earth everywhere, especially the climate and biosphere. Recent changes are supposedly so severe that the environment has left Holocene conditions and stepped into a new era.

It is believed that hundreds of billions of tons of carbon dioxide, produced in gigantic quantities, are the main trace that humans will leave behind. But such evidence has not yet been found in the geological record. Because of this, the Anthropocene period proposal remains controversial.

In 2009, the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) was formed to prove that climate and geological changes correspond to changing eras. The starting point was the test of a nuclear bomb.

The debate continued for almost 15 years until, in 2023, the Working Group produced a report to the Sub-Commission on Quaternary Stratigraphy, which is part of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). In the report, experts proposed the "Great Acceleration" as indicators of the beginning of the Anthropocene, as well as the Canadian Crawford Lakes, where plutonium isotopes were found in bottom sediments - they appeared after the testing of an atomic bomb.

But recently, the International Union of Geologists decisively and almost unanimously rejected the Anthropocene as a new era in the history of the Earth. This term, as noted, can only be used informally. The fact is that the details of the Working Group's report were known even before the official publication and were widely distributed in the media and popular science literature. Because of this, the word "Anthropocene" managed to come into use before it was scientifically substantiated.

As IUGS experts note, major transformations of the planet such as the "Great Oxidation" or the Cambrian Explosion have not occurred over the past 70 years or so. After all, compared to other periods, the Anthropocene lasts less than one human life. But despite this, the Working Group, the International Union said in a statement, provided an important service to the scientific community by collecting data on the global impact of human activities.

Geologist Jan Zalasiewicz, who has led the Anthropocene Working Group since 2009, also commented: "The IUGS ruling means that the concept "Anthropocene" will continue to be used to reflect fundamentally different concepts. This is a missed opportunity to acknowledge and acknowledge the clear and simple reality that our planet abruptly and irrevocably left its natural state of functioning in the mid-20th century. Myriad geological signals reflect this fact."
