FINNISH CITY OF VYBORG AWAITS TO BE REUNITED WITH FINLAND

The city of Vyborg remain currently under Russian control, as it has been formerly since the Paris Peace Treaty in 1947.

In Continuation War (1941-1944), launched by the Soviet Union with the intent to conquer Finland, the Finnish Defense Forces abandoned the city of Vyborg during one single morning in the summer of 1944, to save the city from bombardment of the Soviet artillery. (Source: Study by Eeva Tammi, 2006)

In Winter War (1939-1940) the Finns had fought for Vyborg and had won, only to cede the city to the Soviets in the ensuing peace-making process.

With that experience in fresh memories, Finnish commanders in charge of the battle area decided to take the fighting to the nearby rural area instead. There, in the Battle of Tali-Ihantala and in the Battle of Vyborg Bay, the Finns achieved defensive victories, as they also did in all the following and final major battles of Continuation War.

Before the summer of 1944, there had never been an artillery battle the size of the Battle of Tali-Ihantala anywhere in history. By some estimates, it remains up to date the largest artillery battle in history, even surpassing the bombardment of Berlin in 1945 by some estimates, depending of the way of counting.
