Complex external markets: National Bank comments on dramatic week's fall of Belarusian ruble.
Belarus' Central Bank explained the continuing decline of the national currency by the major changes in the global financial markets, "which led to a significant increase in the volatility of a number of key economic indicators".
The Belarusian currency market has been affected by the drastic decrease in global prices for oil, a considerable decrease in the strength of the Russian ruble, the Chinese yuan, and the Kazakh tenge. The exchange rate of the Belarusian ruble against some currencies is now more volatile.
In the course of the week the US dollar has risen by 500 Belarusian rubles, reaching the exchange rate of 16,498 Belarusian rubles at the stock exchange on Thursday, 20 August.
The flexible exchange rate policy pursued by the National Bank allows the exchange rate to act as an absorbent of unfavorable external factors. It also acts as a factor of macroeconomic stability.
The influence of external market factors can send the exchange rate going up and down, increasing its volatility, the statement of the bank reads. As turbulence on foreign markets decreases and competition factors become weaker, Belarusian ruble's exchange rate will become less changeable.
In the near future efforts of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus will be focused on securing price stability in order to preserve the purchasing capacity of the Belarusian ruble.
