Epic mythology and the Chuvash variation of the Nibelunglied
Since the age of Romanticism in the 19th century, the Nibelunglied has been widely regarded as a German national epic. Adolf Hitler proclaimed it as the founding myth of the German nation and identified the German people as the descendants of the proud Niebelung clan, betrayed by the treachery of foreign nations. In many ways, the Nibelungleid, immortalized in Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, provided the blueprint for national epic mythology, and before long, it became fashionable for other nations to "discover" their own national mythologies and epic heroes.
However, the origins of the Niebelunglied are far from being specifically German. Its origins can be traced back to the 1200s during the period of Great European migrations among Germanic tribes that represented a cultural group extending over a wide territory of Europe. The hero Siegfried probably combined mythology from numerous historical figures, such as the Frankish King Choldowig I (466-511 CE), his nephew Sigibert (535-575), and even the Chief of the Cheruski Arminius (17 BCE-21 CE), as well as various biblical and classical themes. More interestingly is the treatment of the Hun King Attila, who is depicted as a tolerant heathen, who maintains Christians in his court and honors a code of hospitality. Thus, the origins of the Niebelunglied are trans-national rather than national. This is confirmed by a 2011 translation of the saga of "Atill and Krimhilte" discovered in the Chuvash Republic. Essentially a "Hun variation of the Niebelung saga," its existence confounds any attempts to claim the Nibelunglied for the German nation.
The deconstruction of the national character of the Niebelunglied calls into question the national character of all epic poetry. Epic heroes occupy a space between the human and divine, and the purpose of memorializing epic heroes has been less to represent nations or people, but rather to model values and modes of behavior that bestow a religious aura onto them. We can see the same mythologization in modern-day heroes such as Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), Martin Luther King (1929-1968), Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), and others, who are memorialized less as heroes of a single nation, than for their non-violent contribution to the cause of freedom and human rights, values that are widely regarded as being foundational to our modern world. This should remind us to treat claims to national ownership over epic heroes in the Middle Volga region with due skepticism.

Tatar headdresses
Ethnography on the Kazan Tatars is difficult to find since ethnographers believed that Muslims, though their conversion to Islam, a monotheistic religion, had risen to a post-ethnic level of culture. One major exception is the work by a German professor at the University of Kazan, Karl Fuks, who published a work called Kazan Tatars (Kazanskie Tatary) in 1844. In one intriguing passage, Fuks points out that Kazan Tatar women used to wear headdresses, but they fell out of fashion thirty years ago. What did these Tatar headdresses look like? Thankfully, we can look to the ethnographic sketches by I. G. Georgi from the late 18th century to see. It appears that headdresses that Georgi categorizes as Tatar had much in common with the headdresses of their Volga-Ural neighbors -- Chuvash and Maris. After the establishment of the Orenburg Spiritual Assembly in the late 18th century, Muslims in the Volga-Ural region began to imitate Central Asian clothing fashions, jewelry and other aspects of material culture, thereby diverging from the commonly held dress culture of the Volga-Ural region.
