🚨 BREAKING: EU Pushes to End Veto System After Hungary Political Shift

Europe may be on the verge of one of its biggest structural changes in decades. Following the political shift in Hungary and the weakening of long-standing veto resistance, Ursula von der Leyen has called for a major reform in how the European Union makes foreign policy decisions.

Currently, the EU operates under a unanimity system, meaning all 27 member states must agree on major foreign policy actions such as sanctions, military aid, or enlargement. This has often slowed decision-making, as even a single country can block proposals supported by the rest.

For years, Viktor Orbán was one of the most prominent users of this veto power, frequently delaying or blocking EU-wide actions—particularly those related to Russia and Ukraine. With recent political changes in Hungary, EU leaders now see a rare opportunity to reform the system.

Von der Leyen is advocating for a shift to Qualified Majority Voting (QMV). Under this model, decisions could pass if supported by at least 15 out of 27 member states, representing a significant portion of the EU population. In practical terms, this would allow the EU to move from slow, consensus-based diplomacy to a much faster and more unified decision-making structure.

Supporters argue that this reform would make the EU a far more effective global actor—capable of responding quickly to crises, enforcing sanctions without delay, and maintaining a consistent foreign policy stance. It would also reduce the ability of external powers to influence EU decisions by pressuring individual member states.

However, the transition is not simple. Ironically, changing the unanimity rule itself still requires unanimous approval from all member states. Some smaller countries remain cautious, fearing that losing veto power could reduce their influence within the bloc.

Despite these challenges, momentum appears to be building. Key EU countries, including Germany and France, are expected to strongly support the change. Analysts say the current political window may be short, making the next few weeks critical for determining whether the reform moves forward.

If implemented, this shift could reshape the EU's role on the global stage—transforming it from a sometimes divided union into a more decisive and coordinated geopolitical force.
